A message from Leah about this gathering...
In December of 2023, I began recording an original song about the prophetess Miriam. The song will be released on May 12th, the Full Moon in Taurus, the moon of listening.
Miriam was a prophet, because of her connection to water and her song. She is a matriarch of the Old Testament (the Torah). She is Moses and Aaron's sister.
When Pharoah ordered the Israelite male babies to be killed, Miriam helped to guide baby Moses down the Nile in his basket toward Pharoah's daughter who took him in as her own. Miriam somehow orchestrated for Moses' birth mother to be a nursemaid. Miriam brought her tof (her frame drum) with her when the Israelites fled Egypt. She sang a song of freedom by the shores of the Nile after the Israelites crossed and Pharoah's army perished. Miriam's connection to water enabled her to find wellsprings while the Israelites wandered through the desert.
As you can see, Miriam was a very special symbolic mythical figure in this story. However, the human (mostly males) who wrote the Old Testament didn't do her life or death justice. When Miriam died, the Torah only writes five words of her death: "and Miriam died, she was buried there."
I believe that the stories in the Torah are imperfect, flawed and there for us to learn as much what NOT to do as what to do with our lives. Miriam's story was left unfinished. I wrote the song about Miriam to mourn and celebrate her life, to REMEMBER her. The song is a way for us to embody her legacy and remember our own connection to Earth and our Selves. Miriam is an aspect of the divine feminine, a symbol to teach us how to listen to the Earth and our intuition.
This event is a public mourning ritual as a celebration of Miriam as an archetype and spiritual symbol. Through this celebration, we will send my song off into the world and embody the gifts that Miriam has to share with us through song, drumming and dance by the waters of Lake Michigan.
